Start with measurements, not just age
Age labels are a starting point, rather than a guarantee of fit. Two children of the same age can need different sizes, and garments from different manufacturers can fit differently. Use a flexible tape measure and measure over light clothing. Keep the tape level and comfortably close to the body without pulling it tight. Write down the measurements before browsing so that you can compare garments consistently. If your child is between sizes, contact the shop with the measurements and the exact product name before deciding.
Check the chest, waist and length
For a jumper, cardigan or blazer, measure around the fullest part of the chest. For trousers or a skirt, measure the natural waist and the required length. Check sleeve length too: cuffs should allow comfortable movement without covering the hands. Children should be able to sit, bend and reach in their uniform. Leave sensible room for growth, but avoid buying clothing so large that it restricts movement or feels uncomfortable throughout the school day.
Use the product's available sizes
Open the school page first, then choose the garment you need. The size selector shows the sizes currently listed for that particular item. Labels such as XXS, XS and S are not automatically equivalent to an age across every brand. Check the selected size and price together, because larger sizes may have a different price. If a size is unavailable, ask about availability rather than choosing an unsuitable substitute simply because it is in stock.
Bring the details when asking for advice
The most useful information is your child's school, the garment name, their measurements and an example of the size they currently wear comfortably. Heart & Home's store details include telephone numbers for Coleraine and Ballymoney, so you can ask about an item before travelling. Try uniform on before removing labels or making alterations, and check the applicable returns terms first. A little preparation helps avoid repeat purchases and gives your child a more comfortable start to term.
