The care label comes first
School uniforms can include several different fabrics, linings and embroidered details. Always follow the instructions sewn into the individual garment, even if another item looks similar. A sweatshirt and a blazer are unlikely to need the same treatment. Check whether the label permits machine washing, tumble drying or ironing, and whether it specifies a temperature. If the label is missing or unclear, ask about the exact product before trying a method that could damage it.
Sort and wash thoughtfully
Separate colours as appropriate and check pockets before washing. Fasten closures where the care instructions recommend it and avoid overloading the machine. Use a suitable detergent at the recommended dose. Washing more aggressively is not necessarily better: excessive heat or harsh treatment can affect fit, colour and decoration. Deal with spills promptly using a method suitable for the fabric, testing any stain treatment on a discreet area first. Do not assume that an embroidered crest tolerates the same treatment as the surrounding cloth.
Dry in the way the garment allows
Check the drying symbol before putting uniform in a tumble dryer. If air drying is recommended, allow enough time and space for the item to dry fully. Shape garments carefully when appropriate and avoid intense direct heat. Follow the ironing instructions, paying attention to crests and printed details. Let uniform dry completely before folding it away; storing damp clothing can lead to unpleasant smells and means it may not be ready when needed.
Small routines prevent larger problems
Rotate everyday garments to spread wear and inspect buttons, hems and seams regularly. A minor repair can keep a useful item in service, while ignoring it may lead to a larger tear. Check fit during the term as children grow, rather than waiting until a garment becomes uncomfortable. Keep labels and purchase details for reference, and check care advice when buying a replacement. If you need another item, return to your school's catalogue so that the colour and style match the uniform you intended to buy.
